December 1999
Announcer: "...This Hollywood "It girl (pictures of Angelina in background) is that she once suffered from a terrible disorder. Today she tells Tony Potts about that period in her life in today's Inside Story...:
Quick Clip and Angelina: "I really hurt myself"
Overvoice: Its the dangerous disorder that almost claimed Angelina Jolies life.
AJ: I was nearly in the hospital. I nearly cut my Jugular vein.
Overvoice: The behavior is called Self-Mutilation, destructive act of hurting ones self. The actress told me that it haunted her childhood. And now she is on record to tell people that this is a very dangerous affliction.
AJ: The worst of it is having had some girl, which has happened to me, come up to me and show me cuts on herself...even..my name.
Interviewer: And what does she say?
AJ: She thinks that I sum it up and its cool.
Overvoice: Experts say that Self-Mutilation affects over a million people and is viewed by many as a cry for help. Jonny Depp and the late Princess Diana suffered from the affliction. So did Christina Ricci who, in a Rolling Stones Cover Story that she would use bottle caps and cigarette's to harm herself. "The pain would be so bad that it would force my body to slow down. It wouldn't make me anxious . It would make me calm."
AJ" I was..trying to feel something....I was looking at different things..thinking romantically about...about blood. I really hurt myself.
Overvoice: Angelina explores mental illness in her new film Girl, Interrupted. Now in real life the actress has overcome her own problem but the scars still remain and are visible to this day...
AJ: I was just....a kid. I was like 13, And, I was saying that it is not something that is cool. Its not cool. And I understand that it is a cry for help...
Announcer: Now oddly enough her role in Girl, Interrupted was originally written as a girl who suffered from Self-Mutilation, but that was re-writted. Angelina Jolie is, of course, the daughter of Jon Voight. Girl, Interrupted will be in limited release December first and the Hollywood Premiere is tonight.
